The Discovery

This important natural monument was uncovered by accident on November 2, 1872 by Joseph Wilhelm Amrein-Troller during building work on a wine cellar on this site. The Glacier Garden was officially opened to the public on May 1, 1873, and excavation work went on until 1876. The canvas roofing erected in 1980 now protects the natural monument from the weather and the damaging effects of atmospheric pollution.
