Geological finds around Lucerne

The bedrock around Lucerne features an exceptional variety of fossils. A relief illustrates the different sedimentation areas within a typical molasse landscape in the alpine foreland.

Strata in the Rotsee area

These rocks feature large quantities of marine animals that lived in the Lucerne basin some 20 million years ago.

Sandstone of the Lion Monument

Deposited as a result of wave action and tidal flows on the beach. Most of the stone used to build the city of Lucerne came from this former quarry, including the material for reconstructing the Hofkirche, which burnt down in 1633.

Bird tracks and coal indicate the presence of swamps near the coastline.
