Special exhibitions - Top of the Alps

Top of the Alps Bild 474

Top of the Alps
Panoramic Photographs of the Alps

of Willi P. Burkhardt and Matthias Taugwalder

Special exhibition of November 11th 2011
until October 14th, 2012.

The Glacier Garden in Lucerne with its glacial potholes demonstrates both the formative powers of nature and the age old efforts of humans to orient themselves in space, representing the landscape through models, maps and panoramas.

The special exhibition Top of the Alps features large scale panoramic images of alpine landscapes. A major focus of the exhibition are the walk-in rotundas, containing 360° high-resolution panoramic photos. These gigapixel images were produced by Matthias Taugwalder, a young mountaineer from Zermatt, who has dedicated his time and skills as a photographer and computer scientist to the digital inventory of the Alps.

Contrasting Taugwalder’s images, taken at ground level, the exhibition features panoramic aerial photographs created by Willi P. Burkhardt, a well-known photo-grapher from Nidwalden. He has authored several books with panoramic photographs and is considered a pioneer of aerial photography using helicopters.
